Why the Apple Watch Failed

Smartwatches are still a relatively new category of gadgets. People are yet to really warm up to smartwatches and there is still a long way to go before every wrist will sport a smartwatch. However, even in such an ambitious field, there is one overambitious player who has managed to spectacularly fail miserably. That brand is none other than the much famed Apple, with their much hyped Apple watch. The latest smartwatch news was swamped with anticipation and rumors for nearly a year regarding what the Apple watch will look like and what features it will sport. However, in the end, the Apple watch ended up being everything but what it was supposed to be. Lots of people, especially those aware of what the current smartwatch specifications are, predicted the failure of the Apple Watch. However, the extent to which it failed still managed to baffle everyone.

There are many reasons why this smartwatch failed. For starters there was nothing path breaking about it. People expect Apple to always come out with something new. The image of Steve Jobs removing the iPad from a Manila envelope is forever etched in everyone’s mind. Hence, as its first product in a brand new line of products, the Apple Watch was supposed to do something that no other smartwatch could. However, it ended up having just those features which you would expect from any smartwatch. Also, since it only paired with an iPhone, it indicated that this was a watch that was exclusive to the Apple family and as usual, it turned a blind eye to the millions of Android users, who could have been considering the Apple watch.

All said and done, the rumours didn’t help either. The anticipation and hype projected in the latest smartwatch news was bound to be difficult for Apple to live up to anyway but the rumours only made it worse. Some renditions of the Apple watch, which turned out to be fake, actually ended up looking better than what was finally released by Apple itself. People claim that there are some products that are somehow ‘ahead of their time’ and hence, they fail to do well. However, the Apple watch doesn’t even fall into that category. Even in a time when smartwatches are trying to establish themselves as a mainstream gadget, the Apple watch doesn’t come close to helping that cause.

Undoubtedly, leaving the smartwatch specifications of this device aside, what worked most against the Apple Watch was its price. People don’t mind paying for an iPhone since a phone is a necessity. However, shelling out the equivalent of the cost of an iPhone for nothing but a fancy accessory seemed ludicrous even to those people with very loose purse strings. Hence, all of its shortcomings notwithstanding, the Apple Watch simply didn’t tick off any of the right boxes.

So, these were some of the reasons why the Apple Watch failed. Here’s hoping that Tim Cook and his team are working hard to undo the damage that the Apple Watch has done to a brand that was considered indestructible.
