The latest
handset to set news sources abuzz is the new OnePlus 2. This is a device that
succeeds the noted Flagship Killer OnePlus One. According to handheld news sources, the Chinese
manufacturer is all set to officially make this device available to the public
on August 11th. Unfortunately, that is where the good news ends, as OnePlus
is set to reprise its infamous invite system for buying its latest product. OnePlus
got as much flak for its invite system as the praise it got for its actual
device.
The idea
behind the invite system is a modification of the just in time system started
by Toyota. This helps to ensure that demand and supply are at par, although in
the case of OnePlus, the initial supply run is seemingly far behind demand, as
many people are left lurking in the unknown, simply waiting and hoping for an
invite to pop along.
There is a
silver lining to the entire circus of the invite system this time around
though. For starters, OnePlus has made a special section on its website for
people who don’t have the time or the determination to go through the forums
and take part in contests and social media platform events. These registered
people will be given priority, with older applicants at the top of the priority
list. Another thing that is being reported in handheld news sources is that this time, shipping will be faster
for OnePlus 2 handsets.
This is
important because despite the OnePlus 2
features and specifications, this handset too may suffer from lost sales
due to frustrated customers who simply couldn’t wait it out. The scarcity
phenomenon managed to pique curiosity for sure but it unfortunately couldn’t sustain
the curiosity created, backfiring due to serious customers who called it
nothing but a carrot on stick tactic. The hype created proved to be a double
edged sword which hopefully this time, OnePlus manages to use judiciously.
OnePlus does
make use of holiday season, when it offers handsets without the need for an
official invite system. In the end, the OnePlus
2 features and specifications undoubtedly will still push some determined
individuals to wait it out till they finally get lucky. However, OnePlus
shouldn’t try and push this loyal customer base to the brink of losing them
like it did last time. A new smartphone is often an urgent purchase, which
means people may have a short span of tolerance toward a waitlist for purchase,
especially when so many other brands are offering great devices at competitive
prices, available instantly. For now though, if you’ve got your heart and mind
set on the OnePlus 2 and are willing to wait out the invite, then just like Pharrell
Williams and Daft Punk, you’ll need to stay up all night to get lucky.
